He went on to win a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash four days later, then collapsed in a heap and needed a wheelchair to get off the track, suggesting that sports officials and team doctors have put athletes’ health last, not first, during the Paris Olympics.

Although two Phase 3 trials suggested the treatment was effective, strong opposition by an agency scientific advisory committee in June and allegations of missing adverse event data and research bias may have doomed the application by Lykos Therapeutics.

In "Optimizing the Dosage of Human Prescription Drugs and Biological Products for the Treatment of Oncologic Diseases," the FDA notes that "targeted therapies demonstrate different dose-response relationships compared to cytotoxic chemotherapy, such that doses below the Maximum Tolerated Dose (MTD) may have similar efficacy to the MTD but with fewer toxicities.
